That the action has been relocated from sleepy Washington to furious New York City, almost all names have been changed, that the plot has been vastly over-complicated, is of lesser interest than a straight genre film, has been overloaded into an elegy of private, political, and finally, cosmic pessimism, a kind of national, if not metaphysical, guilt film to enchant the disenchanted. The word hero might be a stretch, however, because Turner is just a low-level CIA flunky. Several times he reminds us he “just reads books” and files reports on them, like when he calls in the hit to the home office. In 1975, some viewers probably found comfort in the idea that these nefarious activities were only carried out by Richard Nixon, a failed president who resigned in disgrace. The frightening truth is, agencies like the FBI and the CIA were engaging in shady operations way before Nixon became president—and long after he resigned.Three Days of the Condor". The Numbers. Even more so than Peter Benchley, the author is one whose credentials are easily established by mentioning the movie version of his book: Three Days of the Condor, released the same year as Jaws. Like Jaws, Three Days of the Condor made liberal changes to its source material. Like Jaws, that source material is so far away from the movie in terms of quality that it isn't in the same ballpark, parking lot, or zip code as the film, a ridiculous star vehicle that was nonetheless memorably well-produced. This book is not. However, Joubert, a European who led the massacre of Turner's co-workers, discovers Turner's hiding place. Turner visits Sam Barber's apartment and spends some tense moments in the elevator with Joubert once the other passengers have left. Outside the building, Joubert tries to shoot Turner, but Turner manages to blend into a small crowd. The next morning, a hitman disguised as a mailman arrives at Hale's apartment, but Turner manages to kill him. Three Days of the Condor is a masterpiece in part because it creates a sense of paranoia. Viewers don’t know who to trust, and this creates a suspended feeling of tension throughout the film.

Note: Despite being called six days of the Condor, there are actually eight days mentioned in the narrative: Wednesday to Wednesday. I guess we could regard the first Wednesday as before the Condor ‘takes off’, and the seventh day as a continuation of the sixth, as the hero is up all night. Prologue The protagonist is Ronald Malcom, a man who got his job with CIA while studying for a Masters in Spanish Literature; having never read Don Quixote, he’s hung over and bullshits a comp exam that asks for extensive analysis of Don Quixote—which he’s never read—by rhetorically sliding over to what he’s interested in: genre fiction. He starts out his exam with this bold play

Baudrillard, Jean. Simulacra and Simulation. Trans. Sheila Faria Glaser. University of Michigan Press, 1994, p. 45. French original, Simulacres et Simulation, published by Éditions Galilée in 1981. This is looking more and more like a period piece, dated and curious like one of those great Cold War films looks today (Failsafe or Seven Days in May). And yet it also feels like the beginnings of spy/counterspy films that are going on today, way beyond the pizazz of the early Bond films of the 1960s, and presaging the dozens since, including recent ones like the Bourne films or Syriana. It plays straight up as a suspense film, one where an almost innocent man is caught up in something huge and perplexing and awful, and we all identify with the individual against the powers of evil. Robert Redford plays the role of Joe Turner well, with the usual Redford stiffness, but believably--he reads books, after all--and sympathetically. Narrowly avoids capture and death (or is captured and escapes) by both the Conspirators and the authorities. second assistant art director: graphics / trainee assistant art director: graphics (20 episodes, 2018-2020) One of the all time classic paranoid thrillers of the 1970's and a sentimental favorite of mine. James Grady's first novel, written and published when he was in in his mid-twenties. It's very much a product of the time when he wrote it. Watergate paranoia, Vietnam, disillusionment with the U.S. government, the anti-authority attitude of the Baby Boomers and more all play a part in the plot.

Most days, Ronald Malcolm’s biggest worries were from which coffee pot on which floor he was going to get his dose of caffeine, what type of sandwich he was going to have at lunch, and not dawdling too long in the morning so he was at his work desk on time to admire the beautiful siren walking by his building every day. Oh, Jesus!" Malcolm paced the room. He could tie her up and still use her place, but that was risky. Besides, she could be invaluable. He had an inspiration in the middle of a sneeze.
