Since there's a dearth of forensic evidence, most of the police investigation involves interviewing people, looking at photos, observing CCTV footage, and mulling over their findings. Ruth doesn't have a big part in the inquiries, and it's DCI Nelson's inspiration that eventually solves the case.

At this point, Ruth and Nelson have been 14-years in this painful dance. And in this, the final instalment, it’s time to put up or shut up. Hinting at being the last in this series, this book attempts to bring the series full circle with a reference to Janus and a re-emergence of a character from the first book, a nice idea but this added to the unending litany of eye rolling coincidences. I understand the author plans to end the series but Nelson and Ruth will never last bc as I said, good sex isn’t necessarily a forever thing. It’s not enough to cement a relationship through the decades. It just isn’t. Is it helpful? Of course, but you have to have a much more solid foundation based on trust and shared interests and values to really have a longstanding relationship, imo. I do believe, the author does justice, furthering the stories not only of Ruth and Nelson, but also Kate, Cathbad, Judy, Cloughie, Tanya…and even a surprise character from an earlier story (Kleenex, may be needed). As it happens, Ruth's druid friend Cathbad (real name Michael Malone), who was 36-years-old at the time, was on the outing with Ballard and the undergraduates. She studied English at university and went on to work in publishing for HarperCollins – but that urge to write never left her. When carbon dating indicates that the discovered remains predate the children’s home era, the mystery deepens. The most richly accomplished of the brothers’ pairings to date—and given Connelly’s high standards, that’s saying a lot. Another suspicious death increases the pressure on Dr. Ruth Galloway’s relationship with DCI Harry Nelson, which has never been resolved despite the daughter they share and the murders they’ve solved together.

As they investigate, Nelson and his team uncover a tangled web of relationships within the student group and the adults leading them. What was the link between the group and the King’s Lynn café where Emily’s bones were found? Elly Griffiths’s upcoming novel will be her first standalone mystery with the introduction of new characters. Another sweltering month in Charlotte, another boatload of mysteries past and present for overworked, overstressed forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan. The Last Remains By Elly Griffiths is published by Quercus Books and will be launched at St Andrew’s Hall, Norwich, on Thursday February 2, at 6.30pm, in conjunction with Jarrold.Long-running crime series are like an addiction. Once you’ve started with book one, if the author is skilled enough to get you on the hook, it’s impossible to say no to books two, three, four and so on. Sadly, after a while some writers take the foot off the gas and start to cruise – a big mistake, because that’s a real turn-off and there are so many great books out there, all waiting for a willing reader. At the same time, Ruth gets a letter claiming to be from the very individual who introduced her to Nelson – her erstwhile mentor – except he's supposed to be dead. Or so they thought.

Soon, another murder is reported—this time of a female priest. As the village gets ready for its annual re-enactment of the Crucifixion, it becomes even more important to find the culprit before he or she takes another victim. This is one of those books I wanted to rush through to see how it ended while dreading it being over. I will admit to seeing Nelson in a new and not entirely favorable light this time. But the ending was totally satisfying. Griffiths makes sure to tie up loose ends and even brings in characters from past books. This definitely should not be read by anyone who hasn’t read the prior books. DCI Nelson soon learns the victim was a recovering addict, receiving treatment at a nearby private clinic. Then, just when the team seem to be making progress, Cathbad disappears. Was it guilt that led him to flee? She feels that she has been fighting things - Covid, the university, her own feelings - for too long." Ruth and Nelson really don’t have all that much in common. The only thing we know for sure is they’re always having great sex. Whoopteedoo. That’s not enough to stand the test of time, when you have little else in common. I really wanted to see Michelle wind up with someone deserving of her.

Also, I was in King’s Lynn, doing an event at the Duke’s Head, and I passed the Exorcist’s House and it set me thinking about ancient King’s Lynn and how the town really has had lots of incarnations and how I could dig down a bit, if you’ll forgive the pun, into its layers,” she says. What's it About? In the anticipated finale to the Ruth Galloway series, Dr. Galloway and DCI Nelson return with their team to solve a 20-year-old cold case to absolve their friend from suspicion. The Ruth Galloway series is a different sort of police procedural with forensic archaeology, because Ruth (our main protagonist) is an archaeologist. For anyone who has followed this series, it is almost like being at home with the characters. You feel like you know them. You watch the kids grow up. The relationships ups and downs.Sadly, no. Author Elly Griffiths (real name Domenica De Rosa) has been very clear about the fact that book #15, The Last Remains, is the last Ruth Galloway novel. The unfolding mystery draws in DCI Nelson, and the stakes rise sharply as it becomes evident that someone is willing to resort to murder to keep the secrets of the bones under wraps.
