Sylvie in particular seemed a little cold and self centered at times, which lead me to dislike her until late on in the novel. The book tells the story of what might happen if humans had a chance to inhabit another planet, albeit a hostile one where they’re trapped safely indoors the entire time. Each character was socially defunct, functioned insularly, and was all so consumed by his/her first world problems. I realize this now that after reading it was advertised more so as realistic fiction, so I guess that's my fault. Suddenly, there comes news of a wormhole that has opened up in the Pacific Ocean which leads to a distant planet someone has named Nyx.

Her adopted son Scott may have been involved in a hazing scandal --and it may or may not have led to the death of one of the boys he coaches on the school team. The narrative opens with Iris' life as she has just moved to Nyx, but soon jumps back to her life before it.As endings to dystopian novels go, this novel's ending (like many of the other aspects of it) is fairly anticlimatic.

Starting with seeing how content Iris is in her new "paradise" then immediately jumping back to her on Earth (an anxious, bitterly depressed and unsatisfied being) allowed me to see the appeal of such a seemingly crazy notion. Sara Shepard is also the author of the Pretty Little Liars series which I haven’t read but gather must be quite popular since it’s been made into a TV series.All those conversations that should happen, but don’t; the things we are too frightened to say, the decisions we leave until it is too late.
